Day 65: Rainy Monday Morning — Vegan Homeschooling — Waterfront Tacos — Training Wheels on the Sea Point Promenade — Braai Session # 3

Another inconsistent night of sleep last night. We tossed and turned as ferocious winds battered the house all night long. We woke to pouring rain — the second wet Monday in a row. But given the recent drought and the fact that we weren’t fighting the weather on the way to work, there were no complaints here.

However Angeline, the long time caretaker of the house comes on Mondays so we couldn’t hole up and wait out the rain. We wanted to get some school out of the way so we headed down to Mary Ann’s Natural Emporium, a healthy food spot with lots of open tables we hit last week for smoothies. Vegan homeschooling!

It was still grey / drizzling after a couple hours at Mary Ann’s so we drove to the waterfront, grabbed tacos and nachos at the VA Food Market and then went to a play space inside Watershed, the shopping / market experience near the acquarium.

After a solid hour of climbing and a brief meltdown by James (we said no to the arcade mechanical claw with 1 in a billion chance of grabbing a stuffed animal) we headed to Sea Point Promenade to rent bikes.

We know that training wheels are no longer considered best practice for learning to ride but we decided to test it out for an hour, just to give Willa and James the feel of pedaling on their own. They did great! It was a fun and beautiful hour along the water. We see another trip out to the bike track in our future.

We stopped by Wooly’s then headed home to fire up the braai. I’m getting better — got the coals to a solid grey / red heat. The dogs were easy, but hake was a bit tricky: so flakey that I lost some of the edges when flipping it — maybe should have wrapped it in foil? Turned out fine.

And what a difference 24 hours makes… a beautiful sunset without a breath of wind in the garden.

Lastly, I suspect that 10 years from now when I think back on our 2019 Cape Town experience I will most want to remember being outside working the braai, G&T in hand and looking in at Margaret and the kids in this lovely kitchen / dining / family room.
