Day 64: Cape Town Cycle Tour in Camps Bay — Memorable Lunch at The Codfather
[Still struggling with network speed so unfortunately no photos for now.]
Big day today in Cape Town: the annual Cape Town Cycle Tour, one of the largest cycling events in the world with 35,000 riders. As avid NYC Marathon fans we were eager to find a spot on the 100 km route and cheer on the riders. We headed for Camps Bay, having no idea if we were heading into a laughable rush of onlookers. Turns out we were surprised by how few people come out to watch, so we had no issue parking and walking a block to the race.
Willa and James were more interested in the beach so they ran for the sand and built an “airplane” out of washed up kelp. Margaret and I watched the race while keeping an eye on the kids. The wind has remained fierce — the race organizers warned of gusts up to 75 km / h (45 mph). At one point James and Willa chased down and tackled a blown away baseball hat for a street vendor. Heroes!
We walked up to The Codfather for lunch. This place had been highly recommended by a few friends and didn’t disappoint. There are no menus — only choices from two areas: first, a the sushi bar with the Japanese-style conveyor belt of small plates; and second, a glass case of all the fresh fish: oysters, shrimp, lobster, tuna, salmon, angel fish, butter fish, etc. You point out what you want and the number of people eating, and they bring you a big skillet of grilled fish, rice, fried potatoes and veggies. So good.
We got back in the car after lunch and drove up to Sea Point for another view of the race and to check out the Mojo Market. The market wasn’t a disappointment after yesterday’s trip to the Old Biscuit Mill but we did have some tasty fresh made doughnuts while listening to a beautiful singer — Lauren from cover band duo Saul City.
When the doughnuts were done we headed back to our neighborhood, stopping at the playground briefly while Margaret ran into the grocery store. We home schooled for 90 min or so when we got home, heated up a couple Wooly’s pizzas and put the kids to bed.
Quotes of the day:
From Margaret: Willa and I played Rat-a-tat-cat this afternoon and as I dealt the cards she goes, “I’m going to kick your ass off.” I think she mistook my speechless shock for confusion, because she added, “That means I’m going to WIN you!”
I challenged James to Zingo, a sight word bingo game. He wanted to put some action on the game so he said, “If I win I get a Nutella fold over (a Nutella on white bread that’s currently his #1 snack choice). If you win, you get to look at your computer all day.” (Low blow!)
