Day 89: Lunch at Constantia Glen — Triumphant Final Visit to the Bike Park

After two glorious sunny days we woke to overcast and rain as predicted. Luckily we had already accomplished the weather-dependent activities on our highlights agenda with Lobsy.

Margaret got up and headed out early for one last boxing workout at Drenched, then a visit to a sales gallery of Anton Kannemeyer to check out a print that she is going to buy, then a stop by an outdoors store to pick up another day pack— we lost hers a few weeks back.

Meanwhile after breakfast with Lobsy and the kids I left them at the hotel and drove to get a haircut at a highly rated shop I found on Google.

Turns out there were two shops on the same block and I mistakenly walked into the wrong one. I didn’t realize until I was seated and looked at the logo on the smock. I also happened to be the only white person in a shop of 15+ barbers and customers.

The cut was significantly shorter than I requested but it was done with care. Fresh cut for our upcoming safari!

I picked up Lobsy and the kids and we headed out to Constantia Glen winery for lunch. This was yet another rec from our new friend and shoe entrepreneur Grandt Mason.

It was a beautiful spot despite the rain and fog. We had Rose, a cheese plate, flammkuchen (German pizza, also rec’d by Grandt Mason) and Austrian goulash. Everything was delicious.

We were hoping for one more day of biking and luckily the sun came through the clouds as our two little cyclists made their triumphant return to the Bike Park at Uitsig.

This was the site of our earliest and most difficult (and sometimes embarrassing, and painful, and frustrating) stages of learning to ride so it felt really good (for all of us) to come back as capable on 2 wheels — and to show off in front of Lobsy!

Here’s a video of Willa in action…

Luke came over for a final goodbye and glass of wine. Unfortunately Meg was in Jo’burg for work.

We recapped our last two weeks and then sent him off with the bikes and helmets plus a bag of games and puzzles, all of which will be donated to one of the schools within Meg’s company’s network.

We had accumulated all of this stuff over the last few weeks since we’ve had a car since March 1. We drop that car tomorrow and get back on a plane for the first time since we arrived in South Africa on March 1.
