Day 71: Last Full Day in Cape Town (for Now) — Hosting Meg and Luke for a Braai

Today was our last full day on Rosmead Street. We’ve really loved this house and the neighborhood. Anyone looking to rent a home in Cape Town should consider it. It’s the last day “for now” because we are returning for 4 days the first week of April with my mom — but sadly we won’t be staying at this house.

We wanted to make the most of our place on the last day, so we had a leisurely morning at home. and did school. Yes — we do school on Saturdays and and Sundays, using travel days and any other big all-day experiences as our off-days. We were cleaning out the kitchen so the kids got Nutella on their toast… and their faces.

We went to Peppertree Cafe on Kloof Street for lunch and found that all the reviews are accurate: cool spot, good food, terrible service. The wait staff was super friendly and were more into chatting us and others up rather than moving the meal forward. But we were in no hurry, so didn’t really matter. Peppertree has a little shop attached where we got some food for a final dinner at home.

After lunch we walked over to the Kamers Makers market at the high school across the street. The schools started one of their 3-week holidays this weekend so the school was taken over by a bunch of little pop up stores and food stalls. Kids played giant chess by the entrance. We bought some homemade safari-themed workbooks. (The school campus is beautiful and when we mentioned this to Meg later on she explained that during apartheid there were so few high schools they actually needed to build for the limited white population that they made them all really nice.)

HUGE Chess Match!

Meg and Luke were coming over for a drink so we dropped Margaret at home to get things ready while the kids and I made a quick stop by the Kloof Street playground.

Luke and Meg have shot towards the top of Willa & James’s list of favorite grownups. They are both so good with kids and I’m sure our two are clearly desperate for non-parent attention. We spent the evening drinking G&Ts, playing in the backyard, grilling on the braai and then capped it off with a quick stop by Unframed, the super-hipster neighborhood ice cream shop. It was really a perfect end to a fantastic 2.5 weeks in Cape Town.

Road trippin’ to the Winelands tomorrow.
