Day 360: Back to Hanalei Beach
It was another slow morning. We’re all still feeling the jetlag. I started a workout by the pool area but it started to drizzle so I came inside and finished upstairs.
James was pestering the hell out of Willa which always ends badly. He’s a jerk, she screams hoping for sympathy, both actions frustrate mom and dad — it’s no fun for anyone.
Both kids are clearly still exhausted from the one shitty night of sleep on the plane and the jetlag. When he hasn’t; had enough sleep James loses control of himself — just starts acting out of character, not listening, subconsciously trying to get a reaction out of his sister and his parents. Yes, sounds like any 5 year old but he’s particularly bad when tired. When Willa’s tired she’s more emotional and has a shorter fuse — not great combos when James is trying to get a rise out of her.
We tranquillized them by putting on a Netflix PBS show about living in extreme environments.
Afterwards we set up some watercolors outside which entertained them for a bit.

Meanwhile, Margaret and I had a video call with Chris, Rachel, Oscar and newborn Emmett Peun! They had come home from the hospital *today*. It was great to catch up and see that little guy. Oscar was wearing a tank top with a truck on the front and was as cute as ever.
After a quick lunch we packed up and headed to Hanalei Beach. On the way we bought some sand toys and rented a boogie board for the week.

The beach was packed again today. The kids had fun in the sand with their new toys. Margaret took a walk down the beach. I took the boogie board out and then helped Willa and James ride a few waves too. We brought the nerf frisbee James got for Christmas and threw that for a bit.

As predicted, the waves really picked up overnight. Big storms out in the ocean sent 12 – 15 footers to the reef that’s about a half mile out from the beach. The waverunners were buzzing people out there and keeping an eye out for anyone who needed help. The pier was packed with people trying to catch a glimpse of an epic ride.

May and her family showed up around 4pm or so. Great to see them again.
We packed up and headed home around 5pm, seeing yet another rainbow on the way to the parking lot. The Rainbow State is living up to its name — we’ve seen three or four in the last day and a half.

Margaret helped the kids rinse off while I got dinner together: frozen Amy’s pizza, leftover pasta and bell pepper for the kids; salad and some organic / vegan ramen for the grownups.

At dinner I asked Willa how she feels about this being the last stop. “Happy and sad. Happy to see the rest of my family, my friends and Blue School. But also sad.”
Yup, that sounds about right.
MISC:
James wasn’t too tired to make up a couple riddles. Here’s one he threw at us while we were listening to a rap song (not from Hamilton) in the car…
Q: What’s a camel’s favorite thing that makes music?
A: “Camel-ton!” Get it? Like Hamilton?
