Day 247: Not Looking Good for the O’s Hat — A Blind-Date Playdate with the Cranes
Both Phil and Teddy’s emails to Grab were answered….in the negative.

We’re going to hold out hope and keep the pressure on, but, we’re starting to make arrangements both literal and psychological for life after this O’s hat.
Is it replaceable? Should we replace it? Do we move on to something else? Ugggggh.
It’s a little heartbreaking, but we’re trying not to let a lost “thing” get us down too much. This year has taught us better than that! (But still.)
We moved through our down in a funk. Breakfast, school…
By lunch I took Willa and James BACK to Din Tai Fung.
Then we got a few more items (including gold sparkly nail polish. Only the essentials) before walking 10 minutes to a playdate.
We were introduced to Bruce and Kat Crane by our DC family friend Tamara Lloyd (thanks Tamara!), and made plans to get together this afternoon.
Again — blind friend dates aren’t really something we’d do back home, but out here on the road we’re all about it.
Bruce is traveling for work, and Teddy stayed back to get some rare Teddy Solo Time — so Kat and I met at her house so the kids could play with her two boys, Oliver and Simon. They have a gorgeous house and the kids had fun playing for almost 2 hours while she and I chatted (her friend Jenn who’s visiting from NYC was there as well).
Always cool to drop into people’s lives in a new city and see how they’re living. Had a really nice visit. Didn’t get any pics, but did get this one of their two dogs (brought with them from Brooklyn when they moved here last year): Cusco and Mellow.

How did Teddy spend his time? It was mostly catching up on emails and housekeeping items, but he also shlepped our laundry and repaired his suitcase roller wheel. Productive!
We all met back up back to the toy store in search of more watercolors and extra brushes and anything else that might be useful in Indonesia.

We leave on Wednesday and will be in Indonesia for a month (!) with a ton of downtime and we’re hoping to equip our nerds with stuff to keep them occupied so we don’t kill each other.
MISC:
We call our kids The Nerds — it’s just a term of endearment we’ve always used for some reason. Tonight James goes, “What is a ‘nerd?’” To which Willa replied, “Someone who loves math and eat fingernails!” Whaaa?
Speaking of math (and nerds), James debuted a new joke he wrote: “What’s a cow’s favorite thing to do in school? Moooooth! Get it? Like ‘math’ but for cows?”
This is the sign on our hotel/apartment door. Today James was reading it and said: “For your owl’s privacy [I helped him out on ‘privacy’], please doubloons lock your door.” So cute.
