Day 132: Saying Bye to Grammie and Beepaw — Headed to Europe!!

Big travel day ahead. Not just a long-haul flight, but officially leaving five months’ worth of South America, Africa and the Middle East behind us for the ease and convenience of Europe.

Big transition!

After hitting the massive breakfast buffet with Grammie and Beepaw again, we used our remaining minutes to look at the aquarium and ship a bag of souvenirs back via DHL in the hotel’s business center.

By 11:30 am we were hugging and saying bye to Grammie and Beepaw out front. What a fun adventure this was!!! We were so happy to have them with us and genuinely had a great time. They are easy to have along and add so much.

They fly back tonight to DC, landing tomorrow around 8 am east coast time. We will miss them!

As we drove to the airport, Willa said, “A good name for an airline would be United Air of Emirates (that’s what I thought United Arab Emirates actually was).” Ha!

The flight to Madrid was about half full. It was 7+ hours long.

Kids watched iPads for some, wrote in their journals and napped. Teddy and I both watched “Free Solo,” the Alex Honnald doc about his free climb of El Capitaine in Yosemite (heart-stopping) and “RBG,” which we loved.

Teddy watched the first few eps of “Big Little Lies” — I’m jealous he has that ahead of him.

I watched “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” with Melissa McCarthy. It was entertaining but not sure I’d recommend it. I just love her so much. Watched some “Insecure” too which is funny.

I left my f*#&’ing Kindle on the plane. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

We landed at 8 pm in Madrid, where it was brisk outside and total daylight. Didn’t get dark until about 10.

We cabbed to our Airbnb in the Centro neighborhood, just in time for full-blown Friday night hipster party vibes. Our apartment is awesome — nice amount of space, two bedrooms, charming, etc.

And it has HBO!!!! We can watch Season 8 of GOT!!!!! Need to knock that out while we’re here for sure.

We were all asleep around 11:30 pm.
