Day 90: Goodbye Cape Town — Joburg for One Night

Our flight out of town wasn’t until the afternoon, so I took advantage of the morning window to cram in a hair appointment.

Got a rec for a salon from a friend of a friend — Scar on Kloof St. — and had my new buddy Carlos just put in a few foils of blond in the front of my head (per NYC hairdresser Andreas’s recommendation). Got the job done!

We went to De Waal park to get in a little exercise — kids played, Lila and I walked a few laps of the park — then managed to squeeze in a smoothie from Nourish’d, a popular millennial smoothie shack that always has a massive line.

Then – off to the airport. We flew to Joburg on Mango airlines after a small delay, and spent the night at the lovely Peech Hotel. We’ll actually be coming back to this hotel later in the month for a slightly longer stay.

At dinner at the restaurant there was a blowhard American right-winger who sounded like Lindsey Graham seated solo at a table, treating the British couple next to him to an extended, no-breaks monologue about why socialists are taking over America. It was pretty brutal. Reminded us how glad we are to be away from those tedious, polarizing “conversations.” From both sides!

Misc:

  • Sad to leave Cape Town after a combined 3 weeks in the Mother City. We really got to know it, and feel attached — interesting to note that it doesn’t require 3 years or 3 months to feel at home in a place.
  • We wondered on the drive to the airport when we’d be back next. Maybe a safari trip when the kids are teenagers?
  • Latest list of names we’ve encountered over the last week: Happy, Money, Givemore, Lucky.
