Day 78: Concert and Kid Fun on the Africamps Property — An Introduction to Roasted Marshmallows
Today was our last full day at Africamps.
We slept much better last night. The wind was much calmer — a cool breeze came through the screened windows together with the sounds of crickets, frogs, and the rustlin’ around of a furry critter or two.
This morning I did some exercise on the deck as the sun came up over the mountains. I’m losing track of the “wow, gotta remember this one” workout locations and views.
We got another breakfast basket of farm fresh eggs, bacon, sausage, yogurt, granola, bread and croissants.
James was getting irritated by his bangs so after breakfast I told him we’d give him a trim. We have definitely crossed the line into the bowl cut zone but he’s happy. Margaret refuses to let him have a legit cut.

We took our time doing some school and then let the kids play a few math games on their iPads.
There was an afternoon concert down the hill on the grounds of where we’re staying. We grabbed lunch at The Tasting Room restaurant and then lounged in the grass listening to a South African pop / rock / country band called Watershed.

These are Potato Sticks… essentially a twirl of freshly friend potato pierced with a stick.
The kids were very independent all afternoon. While waiting for our food they got 20 rand and, by themselves, went for a 5 – 10 minute “train ride”… essentially a 4 wheeler pulling these little wooden cars in a loop around the farm. Willa convinced Margaret to take her in the canoe around the little man made lake. Willa was happy — Margaret’s shoes were soaked.

They were on and off the trampoline all day and interacting with various other kids that were hanging around — but no real bff connections today. They had a blast the entire time with the exception of the very end of the day when Willa got a nasty little cut on a wooden jungle gym right at the very end of the day — a nail or something snagged her little bicep. But spirits were lifted quickly when we picked up a bag of marshmallows for roasting and (speaking of roasting!) ran into our friend Cracklin’ on the way up to our tent. Video of the big girl here…
We made pbjs for dinner and then roasted marshmallows in the fire we built out in the braai on the deck. Kids. Minds. Blown.

We read a few chapters of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (omg Willa is obsessed) and put the kids to bed. I’m planning to stay up for a bit to catch the second round NCAA game between Duke and University of Central Florida. 11:15 tipoff!
