Day 28: Afternoon in Las Condes — Super Bowl on an iPad thanks to a VPN

A Slow Sunday Morning

  • Late night with new friends last night so we took it easy this morning
  • I did a little exercise while Willa played on the building jungle gym and explored around the courtyard.
  • Went for coffee and learned whole neighborhood starts slowly on Sundays. Many places were closed so I hit the Lastarria Starbucks. Coffees were fine but the croissant I got for Margaret was example #46 that Chileans don’t really do food all that well. It had gone stale 2 weeks ago and was rock hard. I took a bite and literally had to spit it back in the bag.
  • Met Margaret and James at the pool, then had lunch in the apt followed by 90 min of schooling.

Afternoon in Las Condes

  • We took the Metro to Araucano Park
  • A bunch of families there trying to stay cool in various fountains and pools
  • Checked out the bike park ramps and half pipe
  • Then met new friend Patrick Mork and his two kids. Pat is another intro from HBS friend Alex Wit. He’s recently moved from Silicon Valley to Santiago.
  • Kids played Taka-taka (foosball) while adults chatted in the shade near a pickup hoops court. Interesting to get Pat’s impressions of this city after 4 months: modern city, functions well (downside here is that some areas are soul-less); high quality of life, lots of entrepreneurial opportunity, food is meh.

Dinner and a Swim

  • Made our way to Paseo El Manio for Tex-Mex and margaritas at Rosita Comida. Willa’s new fave order is fajitas.
  • We hadn’t stopped sweating since we got out of the pool at 11am so we decided to grab a quick pre-bedtime swim. Really fun.

VPN Super Bowl

  • I realized 5 minutes before kickoff that the CBS streaming didn’t work in Chile. Not sure why. Did some googling and realized I had to purchase a VPN (virtual private network… basically a piece of software that allows you to connect to the internet from a different country from where you are currently.) Wirecutter gave me a recommendation, paid $70 for the year and had it set up in a few minutes. The VPN worked fine, but the internet speed here in the apt made for a bit of a choppy viewing experience.
  • Thinking the VPN might also allow me watch Duke hoops games and March Madness.
  • 13-3, Pats over Rams in a snooze-fest. Brady is officially the GOAT.
  • Bunch of pics and video from this afternoon. Too many for the slow internet. In this apt (or wordpress?) to handle tonight. So will put a little video together and add it tomorrow.
